If you’ve chosen to straighten your teeth using Invisalign, you already know it’s one of the most discreet and convenient orthodontic treatments available. But while Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, they can quickly become cloudy, stained, and worse if they’re not cared for properly.

Failing to keep them clean can lead to unpleasant odours, bacterial buildup, and even impact your oral health. Fortunately, with the proper habits, keeping your aligners fresh and clear is very easy.

At The London Smile Clinic, we want to ensure that your Invisalign journey is as smooth as possible, and we’re always on hand to support you.

In this guide, we’ll cover the best ways to clean your aligners, what to avoid, and how to keep your treatment on track.

The Problem with Dirty Aligners

Although you’ll only wear each aligner for around two weeks, this short period is still long enough for them to become so dirty that it’s a problem.

If you don’t take proper care of your aligner, it can lead to several issues, including:

  • Staining and discolouration – Aligners can turn yellow or cloudy, making them much more noticeable when worn.
  • Bad breath – Bacteria and food particles trapped in your aligners can create an unpleasant odour.
  • Increased risk of cavities and gum disease – Dirty aligners can harbour bacteria, leading to plaque buildup on your teeth.
  • Warping or damage – Using the wrong cleaning methods can weaken the plastic, affecting how well your aligners fit.

Thankfully, the right care routine can easily avoid these problems.

How Invisalign Works (A Quick Overview)

Before we dive into the cleaning routine, here’s a quick refresher on how Invisalign treatment works.

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth gradually.  Each set of aligners is worn for about 1–2 weeks before moving to the next in the series.

To get the expected results, you must wear your aligners for 20–22 hours per day and remove it only for eating, drinking (except water), and cleaning.

Since they are removable, your aligners will require regular cleaning to keep them translucent and hygienic.

Your Daily Cleaning Routine for Invisalign Aligners

Following a simple daily routine will ensure your aligners remain fresh and free from bacteria:

1. Rinse Immediately After Removing

When you remove your aligners, rinse them under lukewarm water to remove food debris and saliva and prevent bacteria from drying onto the surface. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic and affect the fit.

2. Brush Gently

Brushing your aligners at least twice a day is essential. However, avoid using regular toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive and create tiny scratches where bacteria can thrive.

To  ensure your aligners are kept clean:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with lukewarm water.
  • Gently brush the inside and outside of the aligners to remove plaque and debris.
  • Rinse thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth.

3. Soak Once a Day

Soaking your aligners helps to keep them clear and odour-free. You can do this using a gentle aligner cleaning solution. After soaking them for a few minutes, gently brush and rinse them before wearing them again.

4. Keep Your Teeth Clean

Your aligners are only as clean as your teeth. If you put them back in after eating without brushing, food particles get trapped, increasing the risk of staining and decay.

Always remember to:

  • Brush and floss before reinserting your aligners.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your enamel.

You may want to carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste whenever you’re out of the house for the day. That way, you can brush your teeth wherever you are.

If brushing isn’t possible, at least rinse your mouth with water before putting your aligners back in.

What to Avoid When Cleaning Invisalign Aligners

There are times when the best intentions lead to stained or misshapen aligners. Some common mistakes can damage your aligners or make them more noticeable. Here’s what not to do:

  • Avoid toothpaste and harsh cleaners – They can create tiny scratches, making aligners look dull and more prone to staining.
  • Don’t use hot water – It can warp your aligners, making them ineffective.
  • Skip coloured or scented soaps – They can leave a residue and give your aligners an unpleasant taste.
  • Never leave them exposed –  When not in your mouth, store your aligners in their protective case to avoid bacteria buildup and accidental loss or damage.

How To Keep Your Aligners Clear and Stain-Free

Aligners are designed to be nearly invisible, but certain habits can cause discolouration. To keep them looking clear:

  • Only drink water when wearing aligners – Tea, coffee, wine, and fizzy drinks can stain or cause buildup. Stick to cold water when your aligner is in, and remove it before enjoying anything else.
  • Avoid foods that could stain your teeth – Dark berries, spicy foods, and certain sauces can all discolour your teeth. Brush your teeth immediately after eating anything that leaves its mark.
  • Remove your aligners before eating – Even soft foods can leave residue that leads to staining. Not only that, but chewing anything could damage or warp your aligner.
  • Don’t smoke while wearing your aligners – Smoking can cause severe yellowing and odours. Even if you smoke without your aligner in, the nicotine and tar could transfer to the inside of your trays.
  • Clean your aligners before bed – Bacteria multiply overnight, so ensure your trays are clean before sleeping. Cleaning your aligner before bed is essential, just like brushing your teeth is.

What Should You Do If Your Aligners Become Stained, Smelly, or Warped?

If your aligners have already developed stains or an unpleasant smell, try giving them an extra-long soak in a mild cleaning solution. Extra scrubbing may also help remove
