9 Common Invisalign Myths Debunked

BOOK NOW

Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment that has transformed how people all over the world straighten their teeth. So many people choose Invisalign because of its discreet, comfortable, and effective results.

However, despite its growing popularity, numerous myths and misconceptions surround the treatment. These myths can prevent individuals from pursuing the treatment, causing unnecessary confusion and uncertainty.

If you’re considering Invisalign, misinformation may mean you don’t know what type of problems Invisalign can treat or even whether it’s the right option for you.

Common Invisalign Myths

In this article, we’ll debunk nine of the most common Invisalign myths to help you make a well-informed decision about your dental care.

1. Invisalign is Only for Minor Teeth Misalignments

One of the most common myths about Invisalign is that it is only effective for minor alignment issues.

While traditional metal braces were often the go-to solution for more complex cases, Invisalign has advanced significantly. It can now treat a wide range of orthodontic issues, including overcrowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, and crossbites

With the help of 3D technology and customised aligners, Invisalign can address mild to moderate issues. At The London Smile Clinic, we’ll assess your smile to create a tailored treatment plan, ensuring you receive the best possible results.

For more advanced cases, we may recommend subtle Incognito lingual braces, a fixed brace system where the brackets and wires are placed out of sight on the backs of your teeth.

2. Invisalign Aligners Are Uncomfortable

Another misconception is that Invisalign aligners are uncomfortable and difficult to wear. While there may be some initial discomfort as you adapt to wearing your aligner, you will probably find Invisalign much more comfortable than traditional braces.

The smooth plastic aligners are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth, reducing the irritation that metal braces can cause.

You may experience mild discomfort when switching to a new set of aligners, which is temporary. The fact that you can remove your aligners when eating, drinking, or cleaning your teeth also adds to the overall comfort and convenience of the treatment.

3. Invisalign Treatment Takes Longer Than Braces

Some people believe that Invisalign treatment takes longer than traditional metal braces. However, the duration of treatment with Invisalign is generally similar to braces, ranging from 6 to 18 months, depending on the severity of the case.

The key to success with Invisalign is wearing your aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours per day.

4. Invisalign is Expensive and Not Worth the Investment

The cost of Invisalign will depend on your individual needs and is proportional to other similar treatments.

However, we offer payment plans and finance options to help manage costs. When considering the cost, consider the overall benefits of Invisalign and how it can improve your oral health, smile, and confidence.

5. You Need to Wear Invisalign 24/7 for It to Work

While it’s true that you should wear your Invisalign aligners for a significant portion of the day, you don’t need to wear them 24/7. We recommend wearing the aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours daily, removing them only when eating, drinking (anything other than water), brushing, or flossing.

This flexibility makes Invisalign more appealing, as it doesn’t interfere with daily activities. However, the more consistently you wear the aligners, the better and faster the results will be. Skipping hours or not wearing them enough can slow down your treatment and affect the final outcome.

6. Invisalign is Only for Teenagers

Many people mistakenly believe that Invisalign is only suitable for teens. Invisalign is a highly effective treatment for teens and adults.

Many adults appreciate the subtlety of the treatment and the minimal impact it will have on their lives.

7. Invisalign Will Impact Your Speech

Some people worry that wearing Invisalign aligners will affect their speech. While it’s true that there may be a slight adjustment period as you get used to the aligners, you’ll usually find that you can speak clearly and naturally after just a few days of wearing them.

The aligners are thin and custom-made to fit your teeth, meaning they will not significantly interfere with your ability to talk. If you do notice a slight lisp or difficulty speaking at first, it is temporary, and with a little practice, you’ll quickly adapt.

8. You Need to Change Your Diet

One of the biggest advantages of Invisalign aligners is their removability. Unlike traditional braces, which can make eating and drinking difficult, you can simply remove your Invisalign aligners when eating or drinking (except for water).

This means you can continue enjoying all your favourite foods without worrying about food getting stuck in brackets or wires. You’ll need to brush your teeth after eating before putting your aligners back in to maintain good oral hygiene

Just remember always to store your aligners in their case when they are not in use to avoid losing them or damaging them.

9. Invisalign Results Aren’t Permanent

Some people assume that the results of Invisalign treatment are not permanent, but this is far from the truth. Like traditional braces, the results of Invisalign can last a lifetime if you follow our post-treatment advice.

After your treatment is complete, we’ll provide a retainer to wear, which will help ensure that your teeth stay in their new positions. Retainers are crucial to maintaining your new smile and preventing your teeth from shifting back over time. Following our instructions on retainer wear is essential to the long-term success of your Invisalign treatment.
