Thinking about changing your old fillings?

Clients often ask us about replacing their silver fillings so this month we'd like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

Can I replace my silver fillings with white ones?

All silver fillings can be replaced with a tooth coloured restoration whether it's a white filling, an inlay, an onlay or a crown.

Are these restorations as strong as silver amalgam fillings?

These restorations are all very strong but unlike silver fillings they and are all bonded with special adhesives and actually strengthen the whole tooth.

What type of restoration would I need?

The choice of tooth-coloured restoration depends on how big the filling is. White fillings are fine for smaller cavities, porcelain inlays and onlays for larger fillings and porcelain crowns for very broken down teeth.

What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?

They are very similar but an inlay goes inside a cavity whereas an onlay also covers the biting surface of the tooth so these are used to restore heavily worn teeth, for example.

How much do they cost?

White fillings cost from £250 each, Inlays and Onlays from £535 to £645 each and crowns from £745 each.

Edinburgh Castle

In June, 3 of our dentists Dr Bradstock-Smith, Dr Russell and Dr Rhode attended the 3 day BACD dental conference in Edinburgh that focused on developing detailed understanding of bite function and jaw joint disease and how it is related to treatment in cosmetic dentistry. "An excellent multidisciplinary learning experience with lots of useful information we can put into practice come Monday morning" said Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith
