embarrassing Bodies - Episode 7: Sarsha

Snoring

Problem: Snoring.

Solution: Mandibular repositioning splint.

Sarsha’s problem for the Embarrassing Bodies team was a condition that affects millions of people – snoring! Sarsha had tried everything including treatment with a laser to trim excess tissue at the back of her mouth, nothing worked. Dr James Russell’s opinion was sought as a last resort, no-one knew that dentists were well placed to help reduce or stop snoring.

When people are asleep, their muscles relax and in the mouth, the lower jaw (mandible) can fall backwards, narrowing their airway. The air passing through this narrow space causes the tissues to vibrate - snoring! The splint that Dr James Russell made Sarsha holds the lower jaw forwards, keeping the airway open. The result? No more snoring for Sarsha!

There is more to this story though, snoring is much more than just a loud noise. It leads to broken sleep for snorers and their partner, which can affecting their quality of life and relationships. Left untreated it can develop into obstructive sleep apnoea. Also snoring can be a sign of a more serious medical condition.

Studies have shown the lack of sleep caused by snoring can have wide reaching effects such as:

  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Lack of energy
  • Poor motivation
  • Driving accidents
  • Increased stress
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Less income from less effectiveness at work

Your chances of being a snorer are increased by:

  • Being over weight
  • Sleeping after alcohol or sleeping tablets which increase muscle relaxation
  • Being older
  • Some people's airways are just designed to snore!
